Itinerary: 14 days from north to south

Welcome at the airport or port of Tangier with a private transfer. Arrival in Asilah, a coastal jewel whose walled medina, with its white and blue houses, makes for a picture-postcard setting; the town is famous for its street murals and its international art festival. Accommodation in a riad in the medina.
Visit to Tetouan, whose medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and whose architecture carries a strong Spanish influence. We carry on to Chefchaouen, the legendary "blue city" set in the Rif mountains, where every street and façade is painted in a different shade of indigo. Accommodation in a riad in the medina.
A full day to explore Chefchaouen. Visit the kasbah with its ethnographic museum, Uta el-Hammam square, the historic gates and the craft quarter. Optional walk up to the Ras el-Maa waterfall. An afternoon for buying local crafts you will not find elsewhere: wool, ceramics and argan soap.
Transfer to Rabat, the capital of Morocco. Visit to the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower built in the twelfth century, and the imposing Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a masterpiece of Hispano-Moorish architecture. A singular blend of history and cosmopolitan modernity. Night in a riad in the centre.
Visit to Volubilis, an ancient Roman city with remarkably preserved mosaics: the temple of Jupiter, the arch of Caracalla and the basilica. Stop in Meknes, an Imperial City with 40 km of walls and the imposing Bab Mansour gate. Arrival in Fez. Night in a riad.
Guided tour of the Fez el-Bali medina. Visit to the Karaouine mosque (the oldest university in the world, 859 AD), the Bou Inania madrasa, the Mellah (Jewish quarter) and the famous Chouara tanneries. Free afternoon to explore the spice, ceramic and textile souks.
We set off south, visiting Ifrane, the "Moroccan Switzerland". The cedar forest of the Middle Atlas with its Barbary macaques. The Ziz Valley as far as Erfoud. On reaching Merzouga we climb onto camels and ride into the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Night in a camp of Berber tents.
An early start to see the sun rise over the dunes. Visit to the village of Khamlia, known for its live gnawa music. A run along the tracks of the Paris–Dakar rally. Meeting with a nomadic Berber family. Second night at the desert camp.
Camel ride back to camp. Visit to Rissani and its traditional market. The Todra Gorge (200 metres of vertical rock) and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Dades Valley. Arrival in Ouarzazate, its film studios and the Taourirt kasbah.
Visit to the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a World Heritage Site and the backdrop of Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. We cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 metres). Arrival in Marrakech with a free afternoon. Night in a riad.
Tour of the Marrakech medina (UNESCO World Heritage): the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the iconic Jemaa el-Fna square. Free afternoon for the Majorelle Gardens (Yves Saint Laurent) or the colourful spice and craft souks.
We travel to Essaouira, a walled coastal city (UNESCO World Heritage) once known as Mogador. Stop at an argan cooperative. We explore the fishing port, the eighteenth-century ramparts and the lively white-and-blue medina.
A free day to enjoy the Atlantic. Kitesurfing or windsurfing in the best wind conditions in Europe, a horse ride along the beach, fresh seafood from the port, or a visit to the art galleries and local craft workshops.
A last breakfast in Essaouira. Private transfer to Marrakech Menara International Airport. End of this fascinating two-week route through Morocco from north to south.
